During a special school event, children at Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School in New Addington received an unexpected treat when none other than Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the renowned Crystal Palace right-back, made a surprise appearance. The excitement had already been building as popular children’s TV host Ben Shires arrived to meet the kids. Little did they know that he would introduce Wan-Bissaka, who happened to be one of his former students. The football star was eager to return to his old school and inspire the current students who still attended.
As Wan-Bissaka stepped onto the stage, the crowd erupted in chants of his name. He then engaged in a lively question-and-answer session led by Shires, testing the students’ football knowledge. To add to the excitement, three lucky students were invited on stage for a special question.
To commemorate the visit, Wan-Bissaka presented the school with a signed shirt that he had worn during a game, leaving a lasting memento for the children. Reflecting on the experience, Wan-Bissaka expressed his joy, stating that he hadn’t been back in a while but cherished the fond memories the school held for him. The warm welcome he received from the students was unexpected but deeply appreciated. He also pointed out that his return after ten years demonstrated how far he had come and was touched by the kids’ reactions.
Many teachers who had known Wan-Bissaka during his time at the school were present and shared their memories. Elaine Snow, who had worked as his teacher assistant in Year Six, fondly remembered him as a great kid who had always been passionate about football, much like the other boys in their class. The visit brought immense joy to the children, creating memories they would treasure forever. Wan-Bissaka himself was delighted to return to New Addington, his hometown. The signed shirt would be framed and preserved as a cherished keepsake.
Even the school’s cleaner, Colm Conneely, expressed his delight at seeing Wan-Bissaka after all these years, noting that the football star had always been well-behaved during his time at the school and even remembered his name. The visit served as a heartwarming reunion that left a lasting impact on both the students and the school community.
