France’s superstar Kylian Mbappe has concluded his three-day visit to Cameroon, the African nation from which his father hails. Mbappe arrived on Thursday and was greeted with an ecstatic reception from fans. Many of the hundreds of people who welcomed the 24-year-old forward were sporting jerseys of his Paris Saint-Germain team.
During his visit, Mbappe toured a school that his foundation is sponsoring for renovation. He also visited his father’s village on Djelabe island, where he was warmly received by the local residents.
Mbappe’s uncle, Nkalla, showcased the family home that is currently under construction and explained the roots of the talented French striker. He highlighted how the house has been rebuilt and developed over the years.
At the Bonendale school, Mbappe was given a standing ovation as he signed numerous soccer shirts for excited children.
The planned match between Mbappe and the Cameroonian club FC Vent d’Etoudi was canceled due to security concerns.
Mbappe’s father, Wilfried Mbappe, left Cameroon at a young age and later became a football coach in France. This visit comes at a time when there are ongoing questions about Mbappe’s future at Paris Saint-Germain.
While Mbappe announced last month that he would not extend his contract with PSG, which expires next year, he has expressed a desire to remain with the club for one final season.
PSG will need to sell the player in the current transfer window to avoid losing him for free when his contract expires.
PSG President Nasser al-Khelaifi emphasized that Mbappe “must sign a new contract” if he wishes to stay at the club next season.
Mbappe joined PSG from Monaco in August 2017 in a record-breaking €180 million deal ($196 million) and has since established himself as one of the world’s top players.
