A remarkable sale took place at Sotheby’s auction house, where six single Nike Air Jordans worn by basketball star Michael Jordan during the 1990s fetched a staggering $8 million. These particular shoes were given by Jordan to Tim Hallam, a communications executive for the Chicago Bulls, after significant games that contributed to the team’s six NBA championships between 1991 and 1993, as well as 1996 and 1998. The selling price achieved at the New York auction set a record for such a unique offering and stands as the second-highest ever recorded for Michael Jordan collectibles.
Sotheby’s proudly declared that the prices attained for the “Dynasty Collection” are unlikely to be matched in the future, although the identity of the buyer was not disclosed. Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s Head of Modern Collectibles, hailed the record-breаking sale as a testament to Jordan’s status as the “greatest of all time,” affectionately referred to as the “GOAT.”
In April of the previous year, Sotheby’s auctioned another pair of Jordan’s sneakers worn during his final championship with the Chicago Bulls in 1998. These “Bred” (“Black and Red”) Air Jordan XIII shoes, signed by the player, fetched $2.2 million, setting a record for sneakers. The sneakers were famously worn by Jordan during the NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City, a memorable event documented in the Netflix and ESPN documentary series “The Last Dance.”
The six Air Jordans sold at the recent auction included models VI (1991), VII (1992), VIII (1993), XI (1996), XII (1997), and XIV (1998). The demand from collectors in recent years has significantly driven up the prices commanded by such rare sports memorabilia at auctions.
It’s worth noting that the most expensive jersey ever sold at auction is Michael Jordan’s 1998 final shirt, which fetched an astounding $10.1 million in September 2022. This record currently surpasses the sale of Argentine legend Diego Maradona’s World Cup quarter-final shirt from the iconic clаsh against England in 1986, which achieved an impressive $9.3 million in May 2022.
