The lackluster performance in PSG’s 2-3 defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals on April 11 has made Kylian Mbappe the focal point of criticism from the media.

Goal wrote, “Mbappe had no impact whatsoever on the left-wing of PSG’s аttаck. He only had one successful dribble and three shots off target throughout the match.”

According to ESPN, the French international lost possession of the ball up to 13 times. This was mainly due to the World Cup 2022 Golden Boot winner playing with a lack of focus, composure, and enthusiasm as typically seen.

Le Parisien was harsh in its assessment of Mbappe, feeling that he was the “reason PSG paid the price with a defeat” following a “completely harmless” performance.

Meanwhile, former PSG youth player and Senegal international Habib Beye stated on Canal Plus, “Mbappe should be a player who makes a difference. He cannot have a game like this as the leader of PSG’s аttаck. Mbappe played really poorly. I found him subdued and seemingly unhappy.”

Mbappe received a rating of 3 out of 10 from L’Equipe, along with the same score given to Erling Haaland for an ineffective display when Manchester City drew 3-3 against Real Madrid in this season’s Champions League quarter-finals first leg.

Marca, a Spanish publication, declared that “Mbappe is starting to see everything in white” (referring to the Real Madrid shirt – author’s note). All of Mbappe’s actions on and off the pitch seem to indicate that.

“I won’t shy away from it,” Mbappe told Telefoot before the first-leg quarter-final match. “I will certainly give it my all.”

Throughout the season, the 1998-born forward has repeatedly stated that he will deliver a top-class performance, as if it were a beautiful farewell to PSG. However, “Mbappe has been disappointing,” affirmed Goal.

Recent sightings have shown the French striker often at odds with coach Luis Enrique. His performances on the field have also become less consistent.

A year ago, when asked by BBC reporters if his dream of playing for Real Madrid was coming to an end, Mbappe replied, “It never ends, never. You never know what can happen in the future. I’ve spoken with the president of Real Madrid. We have a good relationship.”
