FIVE stars may never play for Man Utd again as Erik ten Hag makes feelings clear

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has set his stall and knows which players he can rely on in the remaining few games of the season. The under-pressure Dutchman has not been hesitant to rattle his players’ cages, and several will already be aware that they have played their final game for the club, as Express Sport looks at individuals who are expected to go in the summer without ever wearing a United shirt again.

Anthony Martial

Anthony Martial’s contract expires at the end of the season, and he is expected to leave on a free transfer, bringing an end to his nine-year stay at Manchester United. The last few seasons of his career have been plagued by ailments, the most recent being a groin injury that necessitated surgery in January, and he is unlikely to return before the season’s last game.

Martial arrived at United with a lot of potential after the Red Devils paid over £50 million to Monaco, but his struggle to remain fit may mean that he has already played his final game for the club.

Tom Heaton

Third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton has not made a single game this season, and with his contract set to expire in the summer, he may not get a chance unless Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir suffer injuries.

According to the Manchester Evening News, while the 38-year-old has been upset with his lack of playing action this season, he is hoping to secure a new contract with the club in order to join the coaching staff and continue his United career.

Jonny Evans

Jonny Evans has been a revelation this season after returning to the club on a free transfer last summer. He only signed a one-year contract, and the new management must decide whether to extend the 36-year-old’s term.

But after picking up what the club described as a “short-term muscle issue” in the 4-3 defeat to Chelsea about a month ago, Evans has been absent for the last four games, and there is no guarantee that he will play again this season, his last before his current contract expired.

Jadon Sancho

RB Leipzig v Borussia Dortmund - Bundesliga

Jadon Sancho’s future is likely to be determined by whether Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co elect to keep Ten Hag at the club beyond this season, after openly clashing with the Dutchman before being loaned out to Borussia Dortmund.

Sancho has showed glimpses in Germany of the player United paid £72 million for in 2021, but United are apparently willing to trade the 24-year-old permanently in order to generate finances this summer.

If Sancho finds a buyer willing to pay United’s asking price, he is unlikely to return to the club after leading Dortmund to the Champions League semi-finals.

Mason Greenwood

Mason Greenwood has apparently been advised that United will trigger the one-year contract extension in his current agreement, which will take him to 2026, but they are still keen in selling him despite interest from Spanish and Italian clubs.

Greenwood has not played for the Red Devils since January 2022, and if their £40 million valuation is satisfied, he will be unable to add to his 83 appearances.
