Manchester United defeated Newcastle 3-1 in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

The home team seized the lead in the first half when Kobbie Mainoo was given far too much space in the penalty area before scoring.

Newcastle sought for an equaliser, and they were rewarded shortly after halftime when Anthony Gordon scored from close range.

Amad restored United’s advantage soon before the hour mark, bringing the visitors level after only eight minutes. Newcastle tried for another equaliser, but Rasmus Hojlund struck just minutes after coming off the bench to seal the three points for United. Lewis Hall’s late goal made it 3-2 late on.

Andre Onana

Distributed well since United preferred to go long more frequently than not and cannot be held responsible for Anthony Gordon’s goal. Made two important saves at 2-1. 7

In the first half, I was able to keep up with Gordon’s pace, but I never had his measure. 5

Casemiro

Recovered from a shaky start by stopping Gordon and then Dan Burn with a goal line clearing at 1-0. A better day than Sunday. 7

Jonny Evans

Competed admirably against the admittedly off-color Alexander Isak. Another solid performance against one of the league’s top hitters. 7

Diogo Dalot

Solid on both ends without making a significant difference, but did little wrong throughout the night. 6

Sofia Amrabat

Was steady until he gave the ball away, which may have resulted in a penalty on Gordon. Recovered with a crucial block to prevent Isak from making it 2-1 for Newcastle. 8

Kobbie Mainoo

He continued to progress alongside Amrabat and coolly opened the goal soon after half-hour. Came off near the finish. 7

Amad

United fans will once again wonder why Erik ten Hag took so long to start him. Assisted Mainoo and made numerous threats before scoring brilliantly. 8

Bruno Fernandes

Made a huge difference when he returned to the team, providing impetus and inventiveness that United lacked against Arsenal. 8

Alejandro Garnocho

Weak throughout the first half, with a lukewarm shot at goal saved by Martin Dubravka. Kieran Trippier was also far from secure throughout the night. 5

Scott McTominay

United played to McTominay’s strengths, and he delivered a superior performance. Combative in air duels. Quieter in the second half. 6
