According to Spanish site COPE Sports, Manchester United has been closely monitoring Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino’s performances in preparation for a potential summer transfer.

Manchester City, Juventus, and Atletico Madrid have also been scouting the 27-year-old, and while he has a €60 million release clause, suitors are expected to pay less with little over a year remaining on his contract.

Manchester United are likely to strengthen their midfield this summer, with Morocco international Sofyan Amrabat all but certain to return to Fiorentina at the end of his season-long loan, while Casemiro’s future is uncertain due to multiple leave rumors.

The Red Devils have identified Merino as a transfer target, and it is easy to understand why the Spain international has pleased them and other elite clubs.

Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil dubbed the 27-year-old ‘the best player in La Liga’ in September and October 2021, and while many questioned that claim, there is no denying that Merino has been one of the best players in the Spanish top flight in recent years, and he could help improve Man United’s midfield.
