‘Absolutely gutted’ Harry Maguire releases 111-word statement after being eliminated from England’s Euro 2024 squad

After being left out of England’s Euros squad, Harry Maguire has broken his silence.

It was confirmed earlier today that he and Jack Grealish did not make Gareth Southgate’s Euros team.

The defender was racing against time to recover from a calf ailment that prevented him from participating in group exercise.

After skipping today’s training session ahead of tomorrow’s final warm-up game for the tournament, Southgate decided to go ahead with a squad of defenders who are in good health.

Marc Guehi is presently likely to replace Maguire in the XI.

Despite Maguire’s absence, Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite did not make the final cut.

Maguire broke his silence on Instagram after missing out on England’s selection for the tournament in Germany.

He wrote: “I am sad not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer.

“Despite my best efforts, I’ve been unable to overcome a calf ailment. Maybe I tried too hard to make it. Simply put, I am gutted.

“For me, representing England is the greatest honor. This means everything to me. If I can’t aid the squad as a player, I’ll support them as a spectator, just like the rest of the country. Go for the win, lads.

“Next, I will return to the supervision of the Manchester United medical team in order to prepare for next season.”

England will begin their competition in Germany against Serbia on June 16 before facing Denmark four days later.

The Three Lions’ final Group C match will be against Slovenia on June 25.

Maguire and Grealish were the first to learn of their place in Southgate’s team on Thursday, after James Maddison and Curtis Jones were told they didn’t make the cut on Wednesday.

James Trafford, Jarrell Quansah, and Branthwaite all failed to reach the final cut for the competition in Germany.
