United are aiming to sign at least one centre-back this summer as manager Erik ten Hag aims to improve his squad. Ten Hag’s future has been speculated about, but as of now, he will continue in charge at Old Trafford for the upcoming season.

Ten Hag managed De Ligt throughout his stint at Ajax, where they lost the 2018/19 Europa League final to United, before joining Juventus in 2019. The centre-back now plays for Bayern Munich, having moved to Germany for £68 million in 2022.

According to Sky Germany on Tuesday, Bayern could want to sell De Ligt this summer. While no clubs were listed as prospective suitors, United’s need for centre-back reinforcements, combined with Ten Hag’s history of managing the player and prior links to Old Trafford, make it probable that United will be linked with a move in the coming weeks.

It’s unclear whether the Reds will be interested. De Ligt discussed his future before the end of the season, when reports surfaced that he might quit Bayern.

Despite the fact that the German team was considerably behind eventual winners Bayer Leverkusen in the table, De Ligt expressed his confidence for the Bundesliga’s future and his willingness to produce for the club.

“I’m not thinking about that right now.” When asked about his long-term future at Bayern Munich in March, De Ligt replied, “I’m very happy here.”

“Of course, I have not had an easy season thus far. I had been injured for a long time. But I’m feeling fantastic and fit right now, so I want to play.

With Raphael Varane moving on a free transfer and Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, and Victor Lindelof all having injury-plagued 2023/24 seasons, Jarrad Branthwaite and Edmond Tapsoba are just two of the many centre-back possibilities United are examining.
