Didier Deschamps accomplishes something every day that the majority of the France team would deem impossible.
France are among the favourites to win the European Championships in Germany, with Deschamps’ group including William Saliba, Antoine Griezmann, and soon-to-be Real Madrid prodigy Kylian Mbappe.
While Deschamps has coached a star-studded group of athletes over the last 12 years, the 55-year-old constantly exercises his body in ways that the bulk of his players cannot.
Deschamps told French news source RMC Sport two years ago that he spends one hour per day in the plank position.
The former defensive midfielder stated, “Every day, I do hours of plank support. I’m even a little nauseated about it.
“I will not have any relaxation throughout this time. I’ll do it while listening to music, which helps me relax because I usually have too many people in my head and talk to them all the time (laughs).
“I ponder over and over, and I am accustomed to this type of practice. In truth, this type of conduct is really excessive. My wife always tells people, “When he (Deschamps) does certain things, he is always a little extreme.” However, this method of mine has trained both my body and intellect.
“Do my players also praise me?” I’m not so sure. I need to ask them. When I was a player, I couldn’t do the exercises I do today. I had requirements for other parts of my body.
“Now, this sort of training is more challenging and enjoyable. If it was just to punish myself, I would not do it.”
