Fans rage at Cristiano Ronaldo’ celebration at Czechia’s goalkeeper… as Portugal score last-gasp winner to kickstart Euro 2024 campaign

Cristiano Ronaldo taunted Czechia’s goalkeeper and a midfielder as Portugal won 2-1 in their Euro 2024 opener.

The 39-year-old pumped his fist at goalie Jindrich Stanek, who was crestfallen on the pitch, and shouted something into midfielder Petr Sevcik’s ear.

Francisco Conceicao scored the winning goal from close range in the 92nd minute, prompting his pompous celebration.

The stoppage-time winner made up for Portugal’s plodding performance, which required an own-goal equaliser following Lukas Provod’s magnificent strike.

Ronaldo clearly liked substitute Conceicao’s climactic moment, giving him a big hug at the end.

He also shouted something in the ear of midfielder Petr Sevcik while running past him

However, many spectators were disgusted by his antics.

‘Classless,’ one person said on X.

‘No need to do that. Another person said, “Not the best look.”

‘Something you would not expect Messi to do against his opponents. That’s why Messi is the [GOAT emoji],” remarked one, referring to Lionel Messi as the ‘best of all time’.

Another said, ‘And this video highlights one of the reasons I just can’t warm up to him! What was his celebration in front of his opponents about?

‘He is the worst sportsman,’ one said.

Other spectators were more sympathetic to Ronaldo’s outburst of elation and attitude.

‘Probably got stuck throughout the game,’ one thought.

‘The player celebrates the winning goal. ‘Shocking,’ said another.

Portugal had a tough night as they tried to synthesize their great attacking talent.

While they had 74% possession and 19 shots, they went extended periods without creating any clear-cut opportunities.

The victorious start positions them well for matches against Turkey and Georgia, who will most likely try to thwart them with tenacious defense.

Even if they struggled to three points, it is better than the way they began their historic 2016 season, drawing 1-1 with Iceland.

They did, in fact, draw all three group games and finished third behind Hungary and Iceland.

Ronaldo will compete in his sixth European Championship, having first participated in the tournament in 2004.
