SCOTTISH HERO: Scott McTominay’s goal gave the Tartan Army hope of making history at Euro 2024 as Scotland draw Switzerland, 1–1

As the squad emerged from the tunnel, the roar could have awakened the dead.

In some respects, it did.

Steve Clarke’s Scotland needed all the aid they could get to resuscitate their Euro ambitions.

With the Tartan Army’s support, they revived their Group A chances.

The travelling fans were loud and proud in Cologne for this must-win match against Switzerland.

They received the response they were searching for.

Scott McTominay’s deflected strike may have been cancelled out by a fantastic wonder goal from Xherdan Shaquiri following a mistake by Tony Ralston.

However, this victory and performance give them a fighting chance of making the last 16 ahead of their final group encounter against Hungary on Sunday.

It may have ended better or worse.

But at the end, no Scotland supporter here or at home could have asked for anything more.

Clarke is too obstinate to acknowledge he made a mistake with his lineup for the Germany game.

But choosing Billy Gilmour for this one could be interpreted as an admission of guilt.

Except for the forced change in which Grant Hanley replaced suspended Ryan Porteous, that was it.

Clarke maintained faith in the nine other players who performed so poorly in Munich.

They all owed their manager for giving them a second shot.

They were also in debt to the touring Tartan Army and the millions of people watching back home.
