CRAZY BID: Man Utd open talks with Lazio over Mason Greenwood transfer with two rivals also keen on £30million deal

According to The Sun, Lazio has jumped ahead of Juventus in the fight for Mason Greenwood.

The Serie A giants are trying to persuade the Manchester United striker to join them.

Last season, Lazio attempted and failed to take Greenwood on loan after United officials determined he needed to leave Old Trafford after being charged with attempted rape, assault, and controlling coercive behaviour.

When he was made available on loan last September, Lazio president Claudio Lotito attempted but failed to sign the forward.

He faulted United for failing to finish the paperwork in time before the Italian transfer window closed, allowing Spanish club Getafe to step in.

He went on to win the La Liga minnows’ player of the season award after scoring ten goals and providing six assists in 36 matches.

Greenwood, 22, was maintained on United’s roster, and his contract at Old Trafford runs until 2025, with the club having the option to extend it by another year.

However, The Sun understands that the club has informed the £75,000-a-week player’s representation that he is free to leave United if they get an acceptable offer.

United want £40 million for the academy graduate, but Lazio and Juventus believe they can reach an agreement for roughly £34 million with add-ons.

Juventus is reportedly offered Greenwood a three-year contract worth £100,000 per week.

Last season, Lazio finished seventh, qualifying for the Europa League, while Juventus finished third and advanced to the Champions League.

Greenwood joined the Madrid-based club in September, hoping to revive his career after having allegations of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and violence dropped six months earlier.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a new United shareholder, recently hinted at a surprise comeback for the England international, but the club appears to have taken another U-turn on his future.

He stated: “We will make a decision, correct. All I can do is explain the idea behind how we would handle such issues.

“Is he the proper type of footballer, and are we satisfied with whether he is a nice person or not?

“He’s a Manchester United player, so we’re in charge of football.”

“So the answer is, ‘Yes, we need to make decisions.

“It’s evident we need to make a decision. No decision has been taken.

“He’s definitely on loan, but he isn’t the only one.

“We have one or two footballers we need to deal with and make a decision on, therefore we will do so.

“The process will be to understand the facts, not the hype.

Southgate said ahead of the Group C match against Denmark: “Luke will not be involved tomorrow.

“He’s actually on track to meet our initial expectations.

“We were hoping a couple of days ago we might accelerate that a little bit, but he needs a bit more volume work.”

He went on to say that the Euro 2020 final goalscorer is still training alone to balance his workload.
