Steve Clarke’s team was unable to design their own destiny, and instead faced the same fate as their predecessors, failing to advance beyond the group stage of a major tournament. Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay was one of those who suffered heartbreak after failing to make an impression against Marco Rossi’s Hungary side.

The Scots appeared to be heading for a 0-0 draw, keeping their European aspirations alive but slim, until Kevin Csoboth scored in the 100th minute, shattering their prospects of qualifying as one of the top three teams.

McTominay, who scored the opening goal in Scotland’s previous game against Switzerland, was unable to do so again. He had little influence on the pitch – his team did not register a single shot in the first half – and did not resemble the confident playmaker who typically wears a Red Devils shirt.

However, the player received his second yellow card against Hungary, which meant that if his team had qualified, he would have missed the round of 16.

Despite failing to impress in Scotland’s final match of the tournament, McTominay was able to play every minute of his country’s campaign and remains the only Scotsman to score in Germany.

Scotland’s early withdrawal from the competition was sealed as the final whistle sounded in Stuttgart, with the squad sitting at the bottom of Group A with only one point. Meanwhile, the Hungarians will wait to discover their fate in the tournament, relying on other results to secure a spot in the round of 16.
