One of Manchester United’s players has already left for home after being eliminated early from Euro 2024.

Ten days ago marked the start of Euro 2024, and Manchester United had eight players competing in Germany.

Now that there are just seven left, Scotland and Scott McTominay have been eliminated first, as is to be expected.

After a 1-1 draw with Switzerland and a 5-1 thumping by Germany, Scotland lost their last match 1-0 to Hungary and finished bottom of the group.

Scott McTominay’s difficulties

Ten minutes into injury time, Scott McTominay struggled as Hungary’s winner undid Scotland.

Although there was hope that McTominay may provide them a cutting edge, Scotland had pushed ahead in search of a winner.

Despite being used in an aggressive midfield role, the Manchester United midfielder found it extremely difficult to influence the game.

McTominay was the only outfield player to play the entire game with only 34 touches.

He only managed to complete 11 out of 15 passes in the process.

If he had been posing a goal threat, this might have been acceptable, but he wasn’t.

McTominay’s Scotland team managed just four shots overall, none of which were on target, and he did not try a single effort at the Hungary goal.

McTominay will return to Manchester United ahead of schedule. With his 2023–24 season officially ended, Scott McTominay will now take a break.

On July 15, Manchester United plays its first preseason match; McTominay should be available for selection.

When United embarks on its tour of the United States later this month, he will undoubtedly be fired up and ready to go.

Manager Erik ten Hag will decide what his future at Old Trafford is, but this most recent Scotland game made clear his limitations.

McTominay, who scored ten goals in the previous season, can be a valuable addition to the squad. However, in other games, he can wind up appearing completely lost.
