The painful defeat of the Scotland national team has put an end to Scott McTominay’s first-ever UEFA European Championship campaign. In the final Group A match of EURO 2024, Scotland faced Hungary. Despite dominating possession, Scotland struggled to create chances, experiencing the harsh realities of football under manager Steve Clarke.
In the dying moments of added time, Kevin Csoboth scored the decisive goal for Hungary. Scotland was eliminated, marking a disappointing exit for McTominay, the first Manchester United player to bid farewell to Europe’s premier football tournament.
In the match earlier today, McTominay was kept on the pitch for the entire game by Coach Clarke. The 27-year-old midfielder had a subdued performance with only 34 touches, the fewest among players who played the full 90 minutes.
McTominay featured in all three group stage matches for Scotland. His most notable contribution was scoring the opening goal against Switzerland in the second match. Unfortunately, his efforts were not enough to keep Scotland’s hopes alive for the Round of 16.
The match between Scotland and Hungary saw 10 minutes of added time due to a serious injury to Barnabas Varga. The Hungarian forward was unconscious after a heavy collision and was rushed to the hospital, fortunately overcoming the critical situation.
