UEFA dismisses referee who issued yellow card to Kylian Mbappe at EURO 2024 group stage
June 28, 2024, 07:19The referee who officiated the match between France and Austria, Jesus Gil Manzano, has been relieved of his duties for the remainder of EURO 2024 by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).
According to Baoquocte.vn, in the opening group stage match between France and Austria, which France won 1-0, referee Gil Manzano made several mistakes that angered both teams. One of his biggest mistakes occurred in the 35th minute, when he awarded France a throw-in, but Austria should have been given a corner kick.
Just 3 minutes later, Austria conceded a goal due to an own goal by Max Wober. After this loss, Austria had additional reasons to criticize Gil Manzano, as they believed that if they had been awarded the corner kick, France would not have been able to score immediately after.
On the other hand, France were also upset with Gil Manzano for being too lenient, as the Austrian players committed numerous brutal fouls without receiving proper cautions. Statistics show that the match had 24 fouls, the most in the group stage, but Gil Manzano only issued 7 yellow cards and no red cards, with 5 going to Austria and 2 to France, including one to Kylian Mbappe.
In addition to Gil Manzano, his two assistants, Diego Barbero Sevilla and Angel Nevado Rodriguez, as well as the VAR referee Alejandro Hernandez Hernandez, have all been dismissed by UEFA from their duties at EURO 2024. This decision by UEFA is a new blow to the Spanish refereeing community, as all four officials dismissed were Spanish.
