This week marked the official end of the Golden State Warriors dynasty, as Klay Thompson departed for the Dallas Mavericks, effectively breaking up the team that had achieved four NBA championships together.
Draymond Green admitted that he was emotional and couldn’t hold back tears after Thompson informed him of his decision to leave the Warriors. Thompson, who had several options this offseason, ultimately chose to join the Dallas Mavericks, signing a three-year, $50 million contract on Monday. This move concluded his 11-year tenure with the Warriors, during which he, alongside Steph Curry and Green, formed a dominant team that is widely regarded as one of the greatest in NBA history.
Despite their success, Thompson’s performance had been impacted by injuries over recent years, affecting his athleticism, defensive prowess, and shooting efficiency.
Following two disappointing seasons, the Warriors made significant roster adjustments, including Thompson’s departure. He personally informed both Curry and Green of his decision, prompting Green to share his feelings on the move during his podcast. Green recounted his reaction, saying, “When Klay told me, I was just able to listen… It was just like, ‘Wow, alright. Congrats bro, I’m happy for you. That’s dope.'” Green emphasized that while the team dynamic on the court will change, their personal relationships remain unchanged and enduring.
In addition to Thompson’s departure, the Warriors also waived Chris Paul, a legendary point guard, as they pivot towards acquiring All-Star big man Lauri Markkanen. Standing at seven feet tall, Markkanen is sought after for his ability to stretch the floor, which is crucial for supporting Curry, Green, and Wiggins. The move aims to enhance the team’s rebounding and defensive capabilities, while also replacing Thompson’s scoring contributions.
