As Uruguay gets ready for the forthcoming Copa América in the US in June, forward Darwin Núñez said his country is “up for great things”. He also expressed his excitement at the possible involvement of famed striker Luis Suárez.
“We’re all here in the national team and at big clubs for a reason; we have already demonstrated against Brazil and Argentina that we have a lot of young players with exceptional ability,” he said to the press following arrival in Uruguay for the national team’s training camp.
Núñez said the Copa América will be tackled progressively, aiming to advance from the group stage and then “figҺting for every match and doing our best” to win the continental event.
The Liverpool forward, who respects and calls “a great guy,” did not hide his want for Suárez to be in the final squad under Argentine coach Marcelo Bielsa.
“He jokes a lot with the younger players; if he makes it to the Copa América, I would be happy since he is always ready to assist us. “He has a lot of national team experience, which is always good for us, Núñez said.
On June 23 versus Panama at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Uruguay will start their Copa América campaign. Together with the hosts, the United States and Bolivia, they belong to Group C.
