Alejandro Garnacho, a key player under Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, has attracted attention among supporters for adopting a new squad number ahead of the upcoming season.
During Manchester United’s promotional activities for the 2024/25 kit, fans noticed a change in Garnacho’s jersey number. Instead of his usual number 17, which he had chosen to mirror Cristiano Ronaldo’s first number at Sporting Lisbon, Garnacho was seen with the number 6 on his shorts. However, this number is already assigned to his Argentine teammate Lisandro Martinez at Old Trafford, suggesting Garnacho’s change might not be permanent.
Garnacho, aged 20, had only recently announced his adoption of the number 17 last summer after previously wearing 49 when breaking into the first team. The switch occurred following Fred’s departure in the summer of 2023. Garnacho continues to wear number 17 for Argentina at the Copa America this summer, where his dedication to Ronaldo has drawn some playful teasing from teammates.
Despite the focus on his squad number, Garnacho’s focus remains on improving his performance for the upcoming season. He notably scored six goals and provided five assists during the 22/23 campaign, with improved figures of ten goals and five assists in all competitions last term.
