Rasmus Hojlund has been assigned a new shirt number for the upcoming season at Manchester United. This change also suggests which number the new signing Joshua Zirkzee might wear. United announced on social media that Hojlund will sport a different squad number this campaign.

The Danish striker was unveiled as the club’s new No. 9, with the message “Ready to lead the line.” United also shared a photo of Hojlund happily holding up his new shirt, captioned with “Let’s cook.”

Hojlund takes over the iconic shirt number from Anthony Martial, who departed Old Trafford after his contract expired. Notable previous wearers of the No. 9 shirt for United include Dimitar Berbatov and Andy Cole.

Last summer, upon joining from Atalanta, Hojlund initially wore the No. 11 shirt. He previously wore the No. 9 jersey at Austrian side Sturm Graz before moving to Italy.

Hojlund, who scored 16 goals and provided two assists in 43 games in his debut season in England, has also been named in Erik ten Hag’s 29-man squad for their USA tour.

Meanwhile, new signing Zirkzee is expected to inherit the No. 11 shirt from Hojlund. The Dutch forward recently completed a £36.5 million transfer from Bologna. Zirkzee wore No. 11 during his first season with Bologna and later switched to No. 9. He also wore No. 32 at Bayern Munich, a number available at United since Sam Johnstone’s departure in 2018.
